The Use of Resources

Take a look at the information in a general way, look in the index and the table of contents. Search for the topic that you want to work with or similar material. Then look in the text for references or other useful information that can help in your topic. After you've picked it out look for the authers style in his writting and determine wether his information is reliable and proper for your certain work area. You must make sure that the auther is actually providing facts and not opinion or publicity. The auther must be fully profetional and is important that he doesn't take sides or show any emotions in his story. It is more advisable to look for authers that know how to express themselfs through primary as well as secondary sources and make sure that the information used is not outdated. After Doing all this, do some backround search, be certain that the auther is correct on the his subject. You can also look for different sources to find other versions and have a more complete database for your work.

Sample essay for Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting

Qoute: "One reason for the crisis is that present mandatory-attendance laws force many to attend school who have no wish to be there. Such children have little desire to learn and are so antagonistic to school that neither they nor more highly motivated students receive the quality education that is the birthright of every American."
Paraphrase: Private schools on the other hand don't have to deal with this problematic students. If a student isn't showing showing interest towards his studies, they can expel him and force him to attend a public school were academic goals are less demanding. Pucblic schools have more bendable rules and students with bad conduct and grades can still have an education in their lives.
Summarizing:American society has had a big fall in it's education quality according to resent studies in test scores. The main reason of this is that students that aren't interested in studying are forced to go to school and remain there. The only way to put an end to this is to abolish the law that forces students to carry on with their education. Education should be voluntary and if someone doesn't want to take advantage of the opportunities of public education then they should do what ever they feel like.

A Priest in Jail

In the last pages read, I realized that there was a lot of symbolism hidden in this part of the book. The contrast between good and evil or better said, hollyness and unhollyness is very visible when the priest is locked up in jail. I think that they auther shows a comparison between, the example of life that religion teaches and the cruel realities that one can expirience in jail. Also the obsenities that the priest sees are mind blowing for a man of the church. Then the priest reveals he's identity to the inmates in jail. I found this interesting because he actually trusts in people that are evil sadistic maniacs but since the are in the same situation, I think that the priest considers to be part of their social outcast. Then we can see an unordinary sense of good and evil. There is a priest and a religious women in jail because of their belives but neither of them are what they seem. The priest hiding he's true identity and is going against everything he stands for. The women on the other hand doesn't really make sense and contradicts herself. So with this being said, I realized that the auther isn't showing us black and white anymore but is showing us the grey perspective of life.

The Fellows

As the story continues, new characters are introduced into the plot. First they describe Captain Fellows, who seems to be a nice and joyfull person. This is the first time that a person is shown to be trully happy in the story, or at least he seems this way as he sings while driving his boat. Also I thought that it was very weird when he says that the only place were he had been happier was in wartime France. This shows how Captain Fellows isn't a normal person. Then when he arrives home he talks to his wife who is the complete opposite of her husband. Mrs Fellows is a sad person and is constantly thinking about her old age and death. She hates the place were they live and she is always in a bad mood. Their daughter, Coral Fellows is very different to her parents. Unlike her numb mom and dad, she shows to have an independent way of thought and acts upon her believes. We can see this when she hides the outlaw priest in her house without the consent of her parents. She then demonstrates a certain affection towards the priest and even though she could get in big trouble, she offers him her place to hide in the future. As the priest took off she says that if they kill him she would never forgive the people responsible and she would be willing to avange his death. This is very weird because she had known the priest for a very short time and she wasn't even religious. In fact she sugested to the priest to give up his faith in order to save his life.

Religion in The Glory and the Power

In the second chapter of The Glory and the Power I found very interesting the point of view of religion. In this pages, the liuetenant is introduced as a vicious and ruthless person. This character is completley against cristianism and persecutes all religious followers and most importantly, catholic priests. When a photograph is shown to him were a priest appears in a first communion, the police officer is angry and he says that the priest is to be aprehended and executed. Even though this seem irrational at first, this is understandable to a certain point because of all the damage that catholisism has done to his poeple and therefore he is fighting for the greater good. The lieutenant shows so much hate towards priests that he finds them more threatening than a bank robber and murderer(now this is irrational in my opionion). In this chapter they show us how religious freedom is not an option in Mexico during this time period and how people are forced to abandone their faith. They also talk about Padre Jose who was forced to denie his comitment to God because of religious persecution. All of this mentioned above is a perfect example of the abuse the catholic church had in many cultures and how this created confusion and hate towards the religion. Nevertheless people shouldn't act violently towards the issue becuase religion is very important in many peoples lives and not everybody in the clergy is corrupted. Even though catholicism was owtlawed in Mexico during this time period, there were still people who had their faith and this shows the importance of religion.

Mr Tench and The Stranger

In the first chapter of The Power and the Glory I found the characters to be very peculiar. Mr Tench is in a certain way very similar to Meursoult in the novel The Stranger since they both seem very numb. Mr Tench also shows no interest in anything, he is very self concerned. For example, in the first few pages of the book a little boy comes to Mr Tench's house looking for a doctor because his mother is dying and Mr Tench tells him to away with out any simpathy. The other character that the author refers to as "the stranger" was also very interesting. He was mysterious and never reveals much of his character. Another thing a found weird in this guy was when he decides to help the little boys mother but later holds a grudge against him because he missed the boat.

Stranger comment #4

Meursault life takes a giant leap during the next few pages (even though it is a leap in the wrong direction). After Meursault shoots a guy with basically no motive (which makes him a cold blooded murdurer) he is thrown in to jail until his they can find him guilty or not guilty. I think it is very interesting how he doesnt feel sad or guilty for taking the life away from another human being, he just felt "annoyed". Also I thought that it was wierd that he always forgot that he was a criminal, as if he didnt even realize that what he did was wrong. After spending a few time in jail, he no longer finds it disturbing, he had already gotten acustumed to it. The only things that bother him are the lack of cigarrettes at first and female companionship. We see how he doesnt mind change, everything is same for him. We can also see how he might have some mental issues because he doesnt react to anything, its as if he was an animal that only does whats necesary to survive.

Stranger comment #3

As Meursault continues to narrate us his story we atill cant figure him out. He is still The numb, empty, careless person he was since the first page of the book. In one part Marie comes by Meursaults place and tells him they should marry and he says that he didnt really care but if she wanted he would marry her. This shows us how he doesnt even think to make his decisions, he just doesnt care about anything. Also his boss asks him if he wants to go to Paris if he opened an office the and his response was that he didnt really care. In this novel, Meursault is constantly saying that he really doesnt care, its as if he doesnt want anything better for him, hes just waiting to die. Later on old Salamano looses his dog and even though he was always very mean to his dog, he is very sad for lossing his dog. This shows us how even a very mean person has feelings and how he is very sad and worried for his k9 companion.

Stranger comment #2

As I continiued to read the book I thought it was just getting even stranger. Mersault talks a little about his neighbors, first about old Salamano and his dog and then about Raymond. It was very peculiar how old Salamano had lived with his dog for a very long time but still he treated him as dirt and always curse at him. Then when he is talking to Raimond, this guy mentions how he beat up a girlfriend of his because suposivly she was cheating on him. Mersault doesnt think anything of it and just minds his own buisness. Then Raymond asks him to help him write a love letter so that he can get back at his girlfriend and Mersault doesnt say anything and writes the letter. This shows how empty and emotionless Mersault is. He doesnt think anything when his neighbor tells him that he beat up a women and when Raymond wants revenge because of his unfaithful girlfriend he actually heps him. In this part of the book we can see how Mersault doesnt have a perception about good and evil and how he really doesnt care about anything.

I think that through the first twenty pages of the book everything is very mixed up. First of all it is hard to understand how the main character isnt affected with the death of his mother, he shows no emotions what so ever. He also tries to apologies with his boss for the death of his mother which also demonstrates the lack of respect towards her recently dead mother. After he comes back from the funneral, the author show a little of his daily life and he show how empty his life is. He has a girlfriend but he never talks much about her and the reader can see how he really doesnt care much about her. Meursault (the main character) is very strange, specially how he never has an opinion about anything and the way he acts which is in a way very numb and emotionless. Later when he realizes that his boss was angry with him because he asked for two days but because of the weekend it would be four days, he understands his boss. This once again shows how he doesnt really care about his mothers death, normally when a person looses his mother they mourn during long periods of time but he just continues with his empty, meaningless life.
